Transforming existing housing through materiality

Sälghugget | Uddevalla, Sweden

In northern Uddevalla, fifteen 1970s residential buildings have been renovated with new facades. Designed by Okidoki Arkitekter, the project comprises 328 apartments and combines improved energy performance with a renewed architectural identity. The existing concrete structures were retained and upgraded with additional insulation, new windows, balconies, and ventilated facades. The fibre cement panels are mounted on steel substructures, improving fire safety, moisture protection, and airtightness. The renovation has reduced energy consumption by approximately 40 percent while enhancing indoor comfort. Two facade strategies define the architectural expression: diagonally installed panels and small-format panels in a staggered layout. A shared palette of warm, earthy tones ensures cohesion across the area while allowing each building to maintain its own identity.

Nominated for the Swedish Årets Bygge award in the renovation category, the Sälghugget project demonstrates how large public housing can be transformed through targeted architectural intervention, material quality, and improved building performance.

Please note that this Reference project features Patina products. However, since the colour range for Patina NXT is the same, this reference also provides a general impression of the look and feel of a Patina NXT project.
