Facade renovation with Swisspearl Patina Original in Uddevalla, Sweden

In northern Uddevalla, fifteen residential buildings from the early 1970s have undergone a major renovation and been upgraded with new facades using Swisspearl Patina Original. The project, designed by Okidoki Arkitekter, includes 328 apartments that now benefit from improved insulation, better indoor comfort, and lower energy costs.

To give each building its own identity, the facade panels were installed using different patterns and color combinations. Two main design expressions were developed:
• buildings with diagonally installed panels
• buildings with small-format panels in a staggered layout
The panels are mounted with rivets on steel substructures, providing improved fire safety and moisture protection.

Facades with natural character

The buildings share a cohesive palette of earthy tones. Swisspearl Patina Original is a through-colored, sanded fiber cement panel that develops a soft patina over time.
The product line was previously known as Swisspearl Patina, but was renamed following the merger between Swisspearl and Cembrit.

The project – nominated for “Årets Bygge”

The Sälghugget renovation has been nominated for Årets Bygge (Construction of the Year) in the renovation category.
Thanks to additional insulation and the new facade system, energy consumption has been reduced by around 40 percent. Water use in the area is also expected to decrease by 30–40 percent. The renovation includes new bathrooms, ventilation, and upgraded water and sewage systems.

The buildings have been given a modern appearance with new windows and balconies. The existing concrete elements were retained but supplemented with extra insulation to increase energy performance and indoor comfort.

Okidoki Arkitekter has created a varied yet cohesive architectural expression for the area. Swisspearl facade panels are used in different formats and warm, earthy colors that blend naturally with the surroundings. Close cooperation between architects, suppliers, contractors, and the client ensured a smooth process, and customized deliveries supported efficient installation.

The completed phase of the Sälghugget area shows how Million Program housing can be transformed into attractive homes with significantly reduced energy use.
The facades are now airtight thanks to added insulation and Swisspearl Patina Original installed over the existing concrete elements.
